Field Tour 1 – North East – diversification & tourism

Hear about the management of native and plantation forests in Tasmania and view it’s fit within a stunning landscape , then visit an agricultural science graduate who has grown a very successful cropping and grazing business.  Then visit properties where development and diversification have delivered new enterprises including a vineyard and winery, producing cool-climate wines for which Tasmania is developing a reputation for high quality.

Field Tour 2 – Cressy – mixed grazing and cropping

The Cressy district at the base of the soaring Western Tiers has roots in the wool industry and developed further in 1971 with the construction of a channel supplying water for irrigation.  See examples of the results of this development, visiting a mixed farming business, and Bejo Seeds (an international company producing vegetable seeds).  We will also visit a large berry and seed producing farm nearby.

Field Tour 3 – Northern Midlands – wool, cherries and conservation

Tasmania is well known for fine wool production and the Midlands is it’s heartland.  We will visit farmers producing wool for specific markets, while carefully enhancing and expanding plantings of native vegetation and conserving high value native grasslands.  In the same district, visit a landowner who has diversified into cherry production in an area where cherries have not previously been grown.

Field Tour 4 –  Deloraine – three ways to increase dairying profitability

Amidst scenic hills and productive flats visit three properties working to increase profitability, one by being an efficient and low cost commodity producer, the second installing robotic milking equipment to reduce labour costs for cows grazing outdoors, and the third producing specialty cheese and other dairy products, with a farm shop.

Field Tour 5 – North West – diversification and intensive cropping

The North West area of Tasmania is highly valued for intensive cropping due to a mild climate and excellent volcanic soils (Krasnozems).  In this rich landscape of green growth and red soil, cropping is very diversified.  Hear about Tasmanian Food Company branded products (chicken, wasabi, goat milk produce), vegetable farming and visit Botanical Resources Australia, the world’s largest producer of natural pyrethrum for insecticides.

Field Tour 6 –  North West – protected horticulture

Venture inside and under cover to visit farming businesses producing tomatoes and similar crops, and seedings for vegetable growers and forestry.  Lunch at a pick-your-own and commercial berry farm.

Field Tour 7 –  North West – technology and research

Visit an international private agricultural research business, a business producing seed potatoes from superior varieties by tissue-culture, and visit the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture research station to see and hear about soil management and precision agriculture.

Field Tour 8 – Cressy – farm transition

We will take delegates to three farming businesses where the Next Generation has undertaken a transition to management; featuring mixed farming with grazing, mixed cropping and prime lambs, specialist lamb production and other new developments.
